Jewelry Brand ‘MIO HARUTAKA’ Announces Donation to Support Diamond Mining Workers

Bijou de M Co., Ltd. has announced that it will donate a portion of the sales from its ‘MIO HARUTAKA’ brand to the non-profit organization Diamonds for Peace. The donated funds will be used to support workers involved in diamond mining and manufacturing in developing countries, primarily in Africa.

Initiative Launch and Brand Background

The donation initiative began on Earth Day, April 22, 2020. ‘MIO HARUTAKA’ is the exclusive line launched in 2018 following the rebranding of the jewelry brand ‘Bijou de M’. The company was moved to engage in social contribution after being inspired by the activities of Chie Murakami, the representative director of Diamonds for Peace, and through meetings with its members.

Mission of Diamonds for Peace

Diamonds for Peace is an international cooperation NGO that aims to be “a company where diamonds are mined, cut, and manufactured with consideration for human rights and the environment.” Its mission is to improve the working conditions and social status of workers in the diamond industry’s supply chain and to advocate for ethical and fair transactions within the industry. The donations will be used to support these goals for workers in developing nations, particularly in Africa.

Message from Designer MIO
“While observing the daily changes in global consumption behavior and values, I began to feel the need to reconsider our approach to business, especially as someone dealing in jewelry. Natural stones are gifts from nature, created by the divine. I believe jewelry must properly convey their story. I came to think that a business is only truly established when it can properly return wealth to the people who mine the diamonds. We aim for a form where the value of purchasing jewelry lies not only in making oneself shine but also in becoming the first storyteller of its narrative and in returning prosperity to society.”
Designer MIO’s Background

Born to a graphic designer father and a jewelry designer mother, MIO first tried jewelry design at age 20. In 2011, she launched the jewelry brand ‘Bijou de M’ and started the exclusive line ‘MIO HARUTAKA’ in 2018.
