A surprising report has emerged from Sri Lanka. Workers digging a well behind a house have discovered what is believed to be the world’s largest star sapphire cluster, notable not only for its immense weight but also for its estimated value in the billions.
According to information, Sri Lankan officials stated that the sapphire cluster was found by laborers digging a well behind a house in the gem-rich area of Ratnapura. Its weight is approximately 510 kilograms or 2.5 million carats. The name Ratnapura itself means ‘City of Gems,’ and it is known as Sri Lanka’s gem capital. This sapphire was found on the property of a gem trader. The people digging the well on that property informed the trader of the discovery.

In fact, this sapphire was extracted from the well on the trader’s property last year, but cleaning the cluster alone took a year, which is why a complete analysis has not been possible until now. During the cleaning process, some stones fell out, and high-quality star sapphires of a light blue color were found. However, experts have warned that while the sample’s high carat value is 2.5 million, not all stones inside the cluster may be of high grade.
According to information, the rock has been named the ‘Serendipity Sapphire.’ Experts say its estimated price on the international market could be up to $100 million. However, it has not yet been analyzed and certified by independent international experts. A star sapphire is a type of sapphire that exhibits a star-like phenomenon known as asterism.
