【Italy】Bulgari Takes the Lead in Using ‘Only 100% Ethically Sourced Gold’

Editor’s Note

Bulgari has announced a significant step in its sustainability journey, committing to using only certified gold for its entire jewelry line starting in 2022. This move underscores the luxury sector’s growing focus on responsible sourcing and long-term environmental goals.

Commitment to Certified Gold

The Italian luxury brand Bulgari has announced that from January 1, 2022, it will produce its entire jewelry line using gold sourced exclusively from certified suppliers.

Long-term Sustainability Efforts

Bulgari has been committed to continuous improvement throughout its value chain. This effort is based on the Responsible Jewellery Council (RJC) Chain of Custody certification, which the brand, as a member since 2006, has maintained. Since first obtaining the certification in 2015, Bulgari has advocated for the use of responsibly mined gold across its entire supply chain.

Bulgari implements appropriate internal and external management systems to ensure long-term compliance with RJC Chain of Custody standards. It selects materials with Chain of Custody certification at every stage of production, from metal procurement to the final finished product. Furthermore, the company conducts due diligence in line with the OECD Due Diligence Guidance for Responsible Supply Chains of Minerals from Conflict-Affected and High-Risk Areas, including a specific annex for gold, and implements due diligence across its entire gold supply chain.

CEO’s Statement on Transparency
“In the luxury industry, certification ensuring a responsible supply chain is becoming an increasingly important sustainability issue. Therefore, Bulgari is striving to ensure transparency and traceability not only in our own processes but throughout the production and supply processes of our partners. Since 2015, we have sourced gold from RJC-certified suppliers, and thanks to our continuous efforts, we have reached the point where we will use only certified gold starting in 2022,” said Jean-Christophe Babin, CEO of Bulgari.
RJC Executive Director’s Perspective
“Bulgari’s renewal of its certification is a testament to its continuous and strong commitment to creating responsible products,” said Iris Van der Veken, Executive Director of the Responsible Jewellery Council, adding that this achievement is even more noteworthy considering Bulgari’s announcement taking effect from early 2022. “Producing 100% of its jewelry with fully traceable and certified gold will be a significant milestone for the jewelry industry itself,” she conveyed.
