【Lucerne, Swi】Gübelin’s Blue Lagoon Cocktail Ring, a Tribute to the Turquoise Reflections of the Indian Ocean

Editor’s Note

This piece explores how the microscopic beauty within a gemstone—in this case, a Burmese sapphire—can inspire grand artistic creations, bridging the worlds of geology, nature, and high jewelry.

Source of Inspiration

The interior of a Burmese sapphire is spectacular (10.65 ct; 91.3 Gübelin Points), inspiring the creators of the House of Gübelin to design the “Blue Lagoon” cocktail ring. Under the microscope, they examined the center of the precious stone and found spectacular shapes and colors that reminded them of the Mergui Islands near Myanmar. The Burmese archipelago is considered one of the world’s most beautiful and pristine natural wonders.

“Blue Lagoon” Cocktail Ring

Gübelin Jewellery presents its latest high jewelry creation. This sculptural white gold cocktail ring features a large central sapphire surrounded by a row of sapphires, tourmalines, and sparkling diamonds that harmoniously blend in various sizes.

Paying homage to the turquoise hues of the Indian Ocean and the lush tropical vegetation bordering the dazzling white sandy beaches, the creators selected sapphires in blue tones, tourmalines in a stunning gradient from green to blue, and sparkling diamonds.
This perfect match and precise selection of gemstones demonstrate Gübelin Jewelry’s expertise, craftsmanship, and passion for selecting colored gemstones. Burmese sapphires are highly sought after, rare, and known for their deep, saturated blue color. Gübelin Jewellery currently selects only stones that were exported from Myanmar before February 2021, adding to their naturally limited supply. An original finish… the ring’s setting with organic curves, reminiscent of a soft, undulating movement. With great attention to detail, thanks to its artistic sense and exceptional craftsmanship, Gübelin Jewelry positions the sapphires and tourmalines in a soft, harmonious gradient from blue to green. The sapphires and tourmalines in this ring have been specially cut in baguette shape, a testament to the art of jewelry and an extraordinary sense of color.
The “Blue Lagoon” cocktail ring stands out for its sculptural structure and fluid form. The curved elements infuse energy, strength, and life into this design. Round and pear-cut sapphires, as well as round, marquise, and drop-shaped diamonds surround the central stone with an almost supernatural charm that captivates connoisseurs.
Each level of the ring is constructed sculpturally and subtly curved in reference to this inspiration. The gemstones are harmoniously arranged according to their size, elegantly highlighting the undulating, fluid structure. Attention to detail is also evident on the first level, with the sides set with diamonds in a fine thread pave setting. Expert artisans at the Gübelin jewelry workshop in Lucerne spent over 300 hours creating this extraordinary jewel.

For this iconic ruby, Gübelin Jewellery chose a unique placement. The design signature seems to undulate on the ring’s flank, firmly surrounded by a very sober closed setting. Two Greenland cabochon-cut rubies sparkle with a magnificent red. The sophisticated design and gemstone setting draw attention and constantly reveal new facets of the cocktail ring.

Gübelin Gemstone Rating

The “Gübelin Gemstone Rating” provides guidance and allows for comparison when purchasing colored gemstones. The rating system is both easy to understand and comprehensive, used to assess a gemstone’s quality, rarity, and significance. Based on these parameters, experts at the Gübelin Gemmological Laboratory determine a value that summarizes these factors in a chart… the Gübelin Points. The 10.65 ct Burmese sapphire received 91.3 Gübelin Points and is therefore considered “outstanding.”

In all its activities, the House of Gübelin is guided by the company’s “Deeply Inspired” philosophy. With its unique combination of beauty, knowledge, and skills, it is always seeking new knowledge and a deeper understanding of its craft in honor of the pioneering spirit of the family. To symbolize this philosophy, every piece of Gübelin Jewellery is set with the iconic ruby. The ruby is considered the king of gemstones, symbolizing love and passion. And it also symbolizes Gübelin Jewelry’s love for colored gemstones.
