Miners in Angola have extracted a rare pure pink diamond believed to be the largest found in 300 years, the Australian operator of the deposit announced on Wednesday.

The ‘Lulo Rose’

A 170-carat pink diamond – named ‘The Lulo Rose’ – was discovered at the Lulo mine in the diamond-rich northeast of the African country.

One of the Largest Ever Found

It is one of the largest pink diamonds ever found, said Lucapa Diamond Company in a statement to investors.

The “historic” discovery of the Type IIa diamond, one of the rarest and purest forms of natural stones, was welcomed by the Angolan government, which is also a partner in the mine.

Government Statement
“This record and spectacular pink diamond recovered from Lulo continues to position Angola as an important player on the world stage,” said Angola’s Minister of Mineral Resources, Diamantino Azevedo.
To Be Auctioned

The diamond will be sold in an international tender, likely at a dazzling price.

The most expensive diamond ever sold was the 59.6-carat ‘Pink Star’. It was sold at a Hong Kong auction in 2017 for 71.2 million US dollars.
