This article reports on two separate fatal hiking accidents in Hong Kong. We extend our deepest condolences to the families and friends of the deceased.

On September 25, fatal hiking accidents occurred successively at Sky Cliff on Lantau Island and Lion Rock in Hong Kong, resulting in the deaths of a 65-year-old man and a 36-year-old man from falls. Fu Heng Jewellery Co., Ltd. of Hong Kong confirmed that the man involved in the accident on Lantau Island that day was the company’s Chairman, Lo Chung-fai. The company expressed being “deeply saddened” by the incident.
According to information from the Hong Kong Police Force, at noon on the 25th, a 65-year-old man lost his footing and fell down a slope of about 100 meters while hiking with friends at Sky Cliff on Lantau Island, subsequently falling unconscious. Police, upon receiving the report, used a helicopter to rescue him and transport him to the hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. The cause of death is pending confirmation following an autopsy. Lo Chung-fai was known in Hong Kong as the “Jewelry King.”
In 1944, Lo Chung-fai’s father and his younger brother, Lo Ka-chou, co-founded Fu Heng Jewellery Co., Ltd. in Hong Kong. In 2014, after the father’s retirement, the company was taken over by the second generation of the family, with Lo Chung-fai serving as Chairman.
Fu Heng Jewellery was the first Chinese start-up company after World War II to import diamonds directly from Israel and South Africa. It has long been recognized as a premier diamond and jewellery retailer and wholesaler in Hong Kong, later expanding its business to include jewellery manufacturing and export. According to the company’s website, in addition to being Chairman of Fu Heng Jewellery, Lo Chung-fai also served as the current Vice Chairman of the Hong Kong Diamond Bourse, Chairman of the Hong Kong Jewellery & Jade Manufacturers Association, and held the position of Chairman of that association from 2016 to 2020. He was also appointed as a member of the Hong Kong Trade Development Council’s Jewellery Advisory and Exhibition Organising Committee, as well as a member of the Vocational Training Council’s Advisory Committee for the Jewellery and Watch Industry.
