Pink Diamond Sells for Approximately 82.8 Billion Won at Auction

A rare pink diamond was sold at auction in Hong Kong for approximately 82.8 billion won, setting a new record for the price paid per carat in diamond or gemstone auctions.

Second Highest Auction Price Ever

According to the auction house Sotheby’s, the 11.15-carat Williamson Pink Star was sold for exactly $57.7 million (82.8 billion won), marking the second-highest hammer price ever achieved for a jewel at auction.
The winning bid from an undisclosed buyer from Boca Raton, Florida, was more than double the pre-sale estimate of $21 million (approximately 29.925 billion won).
Among precious gems, pink diamonds are the rarest and most in-demand in the global market. The world record for a pink diamond auction is held by the CTF Pink Star, which sold in Hong Kong in 2017 for $71.2 million (approximately 101.46 billion won).

Sign of Market Recovery and Rarity
“The sale of the pink diamond is not only a sign of recovering demand for top-quality diamonds in Asia, but also proves the heightened awareness of the incredible rarity of pink diamonds,” said Wenhao Yu, Chairman of Jewellery and Watches, Sotheby’s Asia.

The Williamson Pink Star takes its name from two other pink diamonds: the CTF Pink Star and the Williamson Stone, a 23.6-carat diamond given as a wedding gift to Queen Elizabeth II in 1947.

Proof of High-Value Asset Resilience
“The remarkable sale at this auction proves that high-quality diamonds can still sell for major prices despite economic uncertainty,” said Tobias Kormind, Managing Director of the UK jeweler 77Diamonds.
He added, “Assets like the world’s finest diamonds have a history of performing well even in turbulent times.”
