A rare pink diamond was sold at auction in Hong Kong for approximately 82.8 billion won, setting a new record for the price paid per carat in diamond or gemstone auctions.
According to the auction house Sotheby’s, the 11.15-carat Williamson Pink Star was sold for exactly $57.7 million (82.8 billion won), marking the second-highest hammer price ever achieved for a jewel at auction.
The winning bid from an undisclosed buyer from Boca Raton, Florida, was more than double the pre-sale estimate of $21 million (approximately 29.925 billion won).
Among precious gems, pink diamonds are the rarest and most in-demand in the global market. The world record for a pink diamond auction is held by the CTF Pink Star, which sold in Hong Kong in 2017 for $71.2 million (approximately 101.46 billion won).
The Williamson Pink Star takes its name from two other pink diamonds: the CTF Pink Star and the Williamson Stone, a 23.6-carat diamond given as a wedding gift to Queen Elizabeth II in 1947.
