It is said that a diamond is forever, and that is why the world is captivated by it. Now, an extremely rare and beautiful pink diamond has been auctioned in Hong Kong for 413 crore rupees. The bid placed for the diamond is double its estimated value. This is a world record for the highest bid per carat for a diamond in any auction. This diamond is named the Williamson Pink Star and weighs 11.15 carats. It is named after the diamond gifted to Queen Elizabeth as a wedding present.

This diamond was sold by Sotheby’s in Hong Kong to an anonymous buyer. Tobias Kormind, Managing Director of a London jewelry shop, explained that the diamond’s connection to the late Queen Elizabeth is the reason it fetched such a high price.

“This is a very surprising result.”

Kormind said that when you link it to Queen Elizabeth, its value increases, and on top of that, it is extremely rare. He stated that over the past 10 years, the prices of the world’s highest quality diamonds have doubled.

This Diamond Was Found in the Mwadui Mine, Tanzania

This cushion-shaped diamond is named after two other famous large pink diamonds. The first is a 59.60-carat diamond known as the Pink Star Diamond, which was auctioned in 2017 for 71 million dollars. The second is the Williamson diamond, which is 23.60 carats. This diamond was gifted to Britain’s Queen Elizabeth in 1947 by Canadian geologist John Williamson. It was among the Queen’s favorite diamonds, which she wore on several occasions.

The Williamson diamond was owned by the Mwadui mine in Tanzania, where both the Williamson and the Pink Star Diamond were excavated. Wenhao Yu, an official from Sotheby’s Asia, said,

“The discovery of any pink diamond is rare in itself.”

Pink diamonds are particularly special among colored diamonds. No one has yet been able to determine exactly how they acquire their pink color. This color is precisely what makes this diamond so extraordinary.
