Domestic First in Gem-Quality Lab-Grown Diamonds

KDT Diamond has succeeded for the first time in South Korea in producing gem-quality lab-grown (synthetic) diamonds. Through years of industry-academia collaboration with Professor Song Oh-sung’s team from the Department of New Materials at the University of Seoul, the company has finally established its own proprietary technology and equipment system. The first lab-grown diamond produced on December 31, 2021, successfully grew and processed a 1-carat diamond.

Advanced CVD Production Method

The lab-grown diamonds produced by KDT Diamond use the CVD (Chemical Vapor Deposition) method, specifically a microwave plasma chemical vapor deposition process, resulting in high-quality, colorless, and transparent diamonds for jewelry. This is a more advanced method compared to the traditional HPHT (High-Pressure High-Temperature) technique, enabling the continuous production of high-grade lab-grown diamonds in a shorter time.

Identical Properties and Environmental Advantages

They are composed of the same elements as natural diamonds and possess identical physical and chemical properties. Even experts cannot distinguish them with the naked eye; they can only be identified using advanced equipment. Lab-grown diamonds are also superior in quality to natural diamonds and are environmentally friendly. Since they are produced using advanced equipment in urban areas, there is no environmental destruction or labor rights violations that can commonly occur in some diamond mines.

CEO’s Statement on Market Impact
“With this development of lab-grown diamonds, we expect to significantly alleviate the burden on consumers caused by the steep price increases of natural diamonds,” said Kang Seung-ki, CEO of KDT Diamond, adding, “In the future, we plan to introduce a variety of new products that can connect with the conscious consumerism of the MZ generation, who are major proponents of environmental friendliness and mining-out.”
