The EU is moving to impose sanctions on Russian diamonds, marking a significant policy shift as Belgium, home to a major global trading hub, drops its opposition. This coordinated effort with G7 allies aims to tighten economic pressure on Russia.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen revealed at a press conference on the 27th that the European Union (EU) is considering sanctions concerning Russian diamonds. While member state Belgium, which hosts the world’s largest diamond trading hub, had previously opposed such measures, it has recently shifted to a more accepting stance. Von der Leyen also indicated the intention to coordinate with the Group of Seven (G7) nations.

The announcement was made following an EU summit held in Brussels. This would mark the 12th round of EU sanctions against Russia following its invasion of Ukraine.
