This article highlights the CAF Caracas Marathon 2023 achieving the highest “Evergreen” certification, underscoring CAF’s commitment to sustainability as the Green Bank of Latin America and the Caribbean.
The CAF Caracas Marathon 2023 has reached a significant milestone by receiving the highest distinction as an Evergreen sporting event. This certification reaffirms the multilateral institution’s commitment to its goal of being the Green Bank of Latin America and the Caribbean.
(Caracas, June 14, 2023) – CAF -development bank of Latin America- is pleased to announce that the VII edition of the CAF Caracas Marathon, held on Sunday, March 19 in Parque los Caobos, received the international certification from the Council for Responsible Sport with its highest “Evergreen” distinction, recognizing it as a sporting event that implements good sustainability and social responsibility practices. The sporting celebration met the standards offered by the Council for Responsible Sport to be officially called a Green Marathon.
The Council for Responsible Sport is a non-profit organization based in Oregon, USA, and its mission is to provide support for the realization of socially and environmentally responsible sporting events and to certify practices that do not generate excessive environmental losses. It issues certifications at four levels: Basic, Silver, Gold, and Evergreen, and has certified over 200 events in America and Europe since 2009.
The sporting event obtained 56 credits in the data collection on good practices, out of a total of 61 credits. Being an Evergreen sporting event supports CAF’s commitment to being the green bank of the region and the Organizing Committee’s commitment to meeting high quality standards for the community and the environment. Highlighting the Crónicas and Foto maratón contests that fostered the integration of the sporting community, as well as donations of school and sports footwear, recycling modules, and electronic waste recycling.
CAF grants importance to the application of practices oriented towards decarbonization with environmental and social criteria; for this edition, practices associated with the following were considered:
– Responsible consumption and sourcing.
– Circular economy by reducing the use of materials and waste generation.
– Waste reduction, reuse, and recycling.
– Energy efficiency.
– Water saving.
– Calculation and compensation of the carbon footprint.
– Equity and inclusion.
– Positive local impact.
The achievement of the official certificate has been the result of an exhaustive documentation and evaluation process, which has guaranteed transparency and established a solid reference for measuring performance in future editions. The outstanding collaboration and constant search for innovation have been key elements that drove the success of the CAF Caracas Marathon 2023.
It is part of our commitment to apply practices that reduce its impact on climate change and minimize the water footprint, focused on social commitment, support for the fight against all types of violence, inclusion, and respect for the environment.
