Dance Groups Excel at Bravissimo

Dance groups from the District Danza school in Rivière-du-Loup participated in the Bravissimo competition held in Drummondville from March 17 to 19. It was an emotional and pride-filled weekend, with several performances standing out.
The competitive troupes from District included children aged 8 to 12, as well as the competitive dance option from Collège Notre-Dame, which brings together students from grades 7 to 11, aged 13 to 17. The 46 students, who had been working on their routines since September, presented 23 performances at the competition.

Top Honors and Special Mentions

In total, five performances received the judges’ “coup de cœur” (favorite) mention among all the performances in their respective competition blocks. These were:
– “A model of the universe” (contemporary category) which won first place and a Diamond mention.
– “In summer” (production category for troupes) and “Fantastic voyage” (Troupe 2) with an Emerald mention.
– “La Casa Bella” (elite hip-hop category) with a Diamond mention and qualification for the “Showcase” final due to the highest score in the competitive-level hip-hop category.
– “It’s all coming back to me now” (elite lyrical category) which won a Diamond mention, qualification for the “Showcase,” and its grand prize in the competitive 13-16 age group with a $1,250 scholarship offered by Cégep de Drummondville.

“That was the best choreography of the competition, of the entire weekend,” emphasizes Catherine Landry, co-owner of District Danza.
Solo, Duet, and Group Achievements

In solo performances, Laurence Jiona and Maude Landry both won a gold medal and a Ruby mention. Laurence also achieved the highest overall score for solo novice 13-16 years old. Among other solo numbers, two silver medals, five bronze medals, and two fourth places were won, including two Crystal mentions, one Sapphire mention, four Ruby mentions, and two Emerald mentions.
In duets, Mathias Dubé and Victoria Pelletier won a gold medal and an Emerald mention with their number “Boyfriend.” Also, Sophiane Lachance and Rosalie Leblanc won a bronze medal and a Sapphire mention with their number “Forever young.”
The group number “Tenir debout” (Troupe 2) earned a gold medal and a Ruby mention. As for the numbers “Boogie woogie” and “I like that” (Troupe 1), the first won a silver medal, and the other a seventh place. Both numbers received a Sapphire mention.
In the perfection category, the lyrical number “Bohemian rhapsody” won a silver medal and a Crystal mention, and the hip-hop number “808” won a bronze medal and a Sapphire mention.

Regional Pride and Recognition

With all these mentions, District secured fourth place among the best schools in the competition. A source of pride, but above all, great visibility for this regional school.

“It’s always rewarding when we go to the city like that, to realize that, even though we are a bit remote in the region, we manage to do good work. We are able to maintain the level and even be above. Our talents are raw, exceptional. It’s interesting to go see other studios compete,” expresses Catherine Landry.

The organization wishes to highlight the attitude, civility, enthusiasm, and professionalism of its dancers and teachers.

Meaning of the Mentions

– Crystal mention: 75-79%
– Sapphire mention: 80-84%
– Ruby mention: 85-89%
– Emerald mention: 90-94%
– Diamond mention: 95% and above

About the Bravissimo Competition

This was a first for District Danza at the Bravissimo competition, and also for the competition itself, which was held for the first time in Drummondville.

“It’s a really renowned, large-scale competition. It’s also a competition that travels to France,” notes Catherine Landry.

On Sunday, invited international judges from Paris came to attend the competitions.
