The largest flawless fancy vivid blue diamond ever discovered, known as the “Bleu Royal,” was sold for a staggering $43.8 million (approximately 200 million Malaysian Ringgit) at a Christie’s rare jewels auction in Geneva on Tuesday.

Mounted on a ring, the 17.6-carat pear-shaped brilliant diamond is one of the rarest ever unearthed. It had a pre-sale estimate of around $50 million (approximately 230 million Malaysian Ringgit).

“The stone made close to $44 million,” said Rahul Kadakia, Christie’s International Head of Jewellery.

Fawcett, Head of Jewellery at Christie’s Geneva, highlighted the diamond’s unique deep, intense blue color and its unmodified pear brilliant shape.

“It really ticked all the boxes, which is why we were able to excite collectors from all over the world,” Fawcett said.

The auction saw Christie’s sell dozens of rare jewels, achieving a total value exceeding $77 million (approximately 360 million Malaysian Ringgit). Fawcett noted that the market for certain segments remains very strong.

“Colored stones are performing extremely well. There is a big market for rare objects, and there are still collectors looking for the best stones,” Fawcett added.
