【Japan】3D Systems Launches Domestic Sales of ‘ProJet MJP 2500W Plus’ 3D Printer for Jewelry Manufacturing

Editor’s Note

This article highlights a key step in the digitalization of jewelry manufacturing: the launch of a specialized 3D printer for high-precision wax patterns in Japan. It underscores the growing market for additive manufacturing in this traditional craft, pointing to a significant shift in production methods.

Digitalization of Jewelry Manufacturing Process and Advances in 3D Printer Utilization

3D Systems has commenced domestic sales in Japan of the “ProJet MJP 2500W Plus” 3D printer, specifically designed for creating jewelry wax patterns used in lost-wax casting. This 3D printer can produce high-precision wax casting patterns in just a few hours.
According to 3D Systems, the global jewelry additive manufacturing market is valued at over $2 billion, and the company, which is advancing 3D printer development across all fronts, appears to view this as a promising application.

Utilizing 3D printers in the lost-wax casting process can significantly reduce manual labor by artisans, enabling the planning and production of unique, complex, and highly artistic designs that command higher unit prices.
Furthermore, by leveraging digital processes—such as designing with 3D CAD, previewing designs on screen, or reviewing resin-printed prototypes before proceeding to precious metal production—companies can offer an enhanced customer experience and facilitate smoother delivery to individual clients.
Reduced finishing requirements lead to less waste of precious metals used in jewelry. It also substantially cuts down on polishing man-hours and allows for the production of complexly designed jewelry that leverages the shape freedom unique to 3D printing.

The “ProJet MJP 2500W Plus” is specifically designed to meet the unique requirements of the jewelry industry, featuring the ability to produce high-resolution, 100% wax casting patterns in a matter of hours. Compared to the company’s previous models, the “ProJet MJP 2500W Plus” achieves up to a 25% increase in productivity through design improvements.

“The newly developed ZHD print mode improves vertical resolution by up to 2x without increasing wax material consumption, achieving a high-quality surface finish. This reduces the need for manual polishing of final parts, enabling the production of three-dimensional, complex designs that are not suitable for polishing.”

Naturally, the focus is not just on speed but also on achieving accurate, sharp edges and feature fidelity faithful to the CAD design. The “VisiJet Wax” material melts similarly to standard casting wax, resulting in zero ash content during casting. It excels in handling fine features and offers durability for casting. Additionally, it is intentionally made in a high-contrast color to make it easy to check minute details.
For print preparation, users can utilize 3D Systems’ manufacturing preparation software for resin 3D printers, offering consistent operability for users already familiar with the company’s resin 3D printers.
