This article reports on the G7’s decision to impose import restrictions on Russian diamonds, a measure intended to curtail a major revenue stream funding Russia’s war in Ukraine.

The Group of Seven (G7) held an online summit on the 6th and finalized a leaders’ statement that includes import restrictions on Russian diamonds. This move aims to strike a blow to Russia’s diamond trade, a significant revenue source following crude oil, and reduce the war funds for Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, as announced by the UK government on the same day.

The meeting on the 6th marked the conclusion of the 2023 summit series, for which Japan served as the chair. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy also attended.
The statement targets non-industrial diamonds mined, processed, or produced in Russia…
