The recent auction of the “Estrela de Fura,” the world’s largest ruby, marks a historic moment in the gem trade. Discovered in Mozambique and weighing over 55 carats, its record-breaking sale underscores the enduring allure and immense value of exceptional natural treasures.
The world’s largest ruby, known as the “Estrela de Fura” (Fura Star), was recently auctioned in the United States. The gemstone, weighing 55.22 carats, was discovered in Mozambique in 2022.
The auction concluded with a final hammer price of $34.8 million, setting a new world record for the highest price ever paid for a ruby at auction. The sale also established a new record for the highest price per carat for a ruby, at approximately $630,000 per carat.
The ruby’s origin in Mozambique highlights the country’s growing prominence as a source of high-quality gemstones. The “Estrela de Fura” is notable not only for its size but also for its exceptional color and clarity, described as a “pigeon’s blood” red, which is the most coveted hue for rubies.
The proceeds from the sale are expected to contribute to local development initiatives in the mining region of Mozambique, according to the gemstone’s owner, Fura Gems.
