Key Partnership for Certification

CDTEC Gemlab, focused on the technological innovation of Colombian emeralds, has established a significant collaboration agreement with ICA Gemlab, a prominent Asian laboratory specializing in colored gemstones. The objective is to establish, among other aspects, new criteria for the scientific certification of Colombian emeralds destined for the Asian market. This initiative is supported by Fedesmeraldas.

Industry Leader’s Perspective

Javier Toloza, director of the laboratory in Colombia, emphasized the significance of this agreement for facilitating the entry of Colombian emeralds into countries like Thailand.

“This memorandum of understanding allows us to consolidate how our emeralds should be analyzed, identified, appraised, or certified abroad, with established standardization processes. It provides precise, coherent guidelines in tune with international markets for the traceability of our gems, the determination of their origin, and the detection of treatments on our precious stone. This is based on technical and gemological information we have consolidated thanks to years of research in our laboratory, directly in Colombia,” he explained.
Strategic Commercial Goals

Óscar Baquero, president of Fedesmeraldas, highlighted that agreements like this are crucial for achieving their commercial goals of opening new markets.

“At Fedesmeraldas, we represent, defend, and guide the Colombian emerald industry, and agreements of this type help us consolidate our commercial objective by opening new markets. This alliance promotes transparency and quality in the gem industry. It was signed within the framework of our participation in the Bangkok Gems & Jewelry Fair, one of the most important gem fairs for our guild,” he stated.

ICA GemLab is distinguished by its leadership in origin analysis and treatment detection for colored gemstones and is internationally recognized in Asia for its expertise and excellence. This agreement ensures that international buyers have the support of expert gemologists and advanced technology, offering fast certifications based on research conducted in Colombia on the origin and quality of this emblematic gem.
