Industrie du luxe : « Le Maroc peut gagner une part de marché considérable grâce au retail »
A Booming Sector with National Impact

Morocco is not only a popular tourist destination for its landscapes and rich cultural heritage, but also a playground for the luxury industry, where major international brands and local talents coexist. Beyond aesthetics and prestige, luxury in Morocco is a booming sector that significantly contributes to the national economy. It creates jobs, stimulates tourism, and attracts foreign investment. The revenues generated by this sector strengthen tax revenues and help valorize local craftsmanship, thus preserving an invaluable cultural heritage.

Local Craftsmanship Serving Prestige

Luxury in Morocco does not just import prestigious brands; it reinvents them through the lens of local craftsmanship. In artisan workshops where time seems to have stood still, skilled hands shape leather, cut precious stones, and weave fabrics with ancestral patterns. For example, the brand Azuelos has elevated Moroccan jewelry to the level of art. Its creations, marked by elegance, are exported beyond borders while remaining deeply rooted in Moroccan traditions. Similarly, the leather goods brand Meqnes transforms its pieces into true works of art. By combining traditional craftsmanship and contemporary design, Meqnes redefines luxury leather goods, making Morocco a serious competitor on the international stage.

Consumer Trends and Designer Insights
“The recent years have been marked by a strong enthusiasm among Moroccan consumers for products combining luxury and craftsmanship. In the post-Covid era, more and more Moroccans are choosing luxury craftsmanship, in line with their lifestyles. New brands have emerged, offering their clientele sumptuous and revisited products, stemming from urban and international trends. These creations belong to the luxury domain while being imbued with the country’s specificities, thanks to rare and noble materials, a high price, selective distribution, and superior quality,” says Salma Abarro, designer and creator of Berber jewelry.
“I believe this trend will continue to evolve locally and internationally. Moroccan creators are embarking on creations that are no longer inferior to international products. Moroccans and foreigners alike seek to own a Made in Morocco product with a soul that tells a story. Morocco, with its millennial know-how, is truly beginning to establish itself in the international luxury market,” she adds.

However, the designer notes there are still challenges to overcome.

“Moroccan luxury is still evolving slowly and heterogeneously. Moroccan creators often navigate solo, without a real financial structure to penetrate a highly competitive international market,” she laments.

Retail: A Solution for the Future

When asked in which specific niche Morocco could carve out a prime place in the world of global luxury, Salma Abarro bets on retail, while also discussing the path Moroccan brands should take to achieve their goal.
