This article reports on a significant auction result, where a painting by Yannis Tsarouchis achieved a new world record at a Bonhams sale in Paris.

The painting Jeune homme posant comme Éros avec une chaise anglaise (Youth posing as Eros next to an English chair) by Yannis Tsarouchis (1910-1989), a major figure of the 1930s generation, set a new world record for the artist’s work at the Greek sale organized by Bonhams in Paris on November 20, 2024. The work, estimated between €400,000 and €600,000, was sold for €571,900.
This sale, organized in collaboration between Bonhams’ teams in London and Paris, and Art Expertise in Athens, achieved an impressive total of €2,956,720, with 69% of lots sold and nearly 100% of works meeting or exceeding their estimates.

In addition to Tsarouchis’s work, other pieces marked the sale:
- Eroticon (1997) by Yiannis Moralis, a sensual and poetic homage to the human form, sold for €483,000 (estimate: €300,000–500,000).
- Hydra – Landscape II (1946) by Nikos Hadjikyriakos-Ghika, an idyllic view painted from the artist’s family home in Hydra, tripled its estimate to reach €171,850.
- A Harbor Scene by Constantinos Volanakis, a master of seascapes, was acquired for €76,600.
- Vincenzo Cornaro and Georgios Chortatzis, a surrealist work by Nikos Engonopoulos, also found a buyer at €76,600.
This sale confirms the growing interest in Greek art, blending historical heritage with modern perspectives. It also testifies to the vitality of the Hellenic art scene on the international market.
