【Saint-Philib】In Saint-Philibert, This Auctioneer Has Opened His Auction House

Editor’s Note

This article profiles auctioneer François Le Gallic, who has returned to his roots in Brittany to open a new auction house, La Souveraine. His venture focuses on monthly thematic sales, marking a professional homecoming to the region.

Auctioneer Returns to His Roots

François Le Gallic, originally from Auray (Morbihan), opened La Souveraine, an auction house, in May 2024. The 165-square-meter premises are located in the hamlet of Kerluesse, near the La Trinitaine store. The auctioneer aims to hold one sale per month, favoring thematic auctions.

Born in Auray, François Le Gallic, an auctioneer, was looking to return to the region.

“I am very happy to be here, in Saint-Philibert, in the Auray region. We have a special connection to the places of our childhood,”

says François Le Gallic, detailing his journey. His move follows a career change. In 2016, he resumed studies at the École du Louvre in Paris, before taking the auctioneer exam organized by the Conseil des maisons de vente. He worked in auction houses in Paris, then in Le Havre (Seine-Maritime) before returning to Brittany.

The chosen location, near Auray, Carnac, and La Trinité-sur-Mer, is easily accessible with its large parking lot. François Le Gallic works there alone but does not rule out hiring after some time and, why not, taking on a partner.

Diverse Activities

While the main activity is auction sales, he can also conduct estate inventories and insurance inventories.

“What appeals is discretion. During a sale, no one knows who the seller is. Discretion is an ethical obligation,”

explains the auctioneer, who is an intermediary between the seller and the buyer.

“We also offer appraisals, free of charge, open to everyone. For valuations, we have access to databases with sales results from colleagues.”

Auctioneers are most often generalists, but

“I specialized in gemstones,”

a term encompassing precious, semi-precious, and ornamental stones.

“I made this choice out of an attraction to precious stones and especially with the desire to understand, to not be fooled by synthetic stones which have existed since the beginning of the 20th century.”
First Sale This Summer

The first sale will take place during the summer. It will be preceded by a public exhibition allowing viewing of the lots. They will also be visible on the Drouot platform. The goal is to hold one sale per month, depending on the lots, and to favor thematic sales: wines, jewelry, or furniture.

The auction house is open to the public every afternoon, from Tuesday to Friday, from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m., as well as on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. and from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. It is preferable to make an appointment. Sales will be announced via media and social networks. Instagram: la_souveraine_auction
