【Spain】”The Sector is Going Through a Moment of Change”, Eva Gomez Virgili

Editor’s Note

This profile traces an unconventional career pivot from pharmacy to gemology, revealing how passion and professionalism can converge to create a unique artistic and technical practice.

From Pharmacy to Gemology: A Transformative Journey

Although she always felt a passion for the world of jewelry and a sensitivity that can be appreciated in her characteristic and very personal style, Eva Gomez Virgili decided to embark on a transformative journey that led her, by chance, to professionalize in this industry. Now an appraiser, gemologist, and jewelry designer, her passion extends to a commitment to well-made things and a tireless work ethic.

The Importance of Rigorous Training
“I consider solid training to be fundamental in any field, and even more so in a profession where there is a certain degree of unqualified practice. In the case of appraisal, for example, it is not sufficiently regulated, and the rigor required for this work is often unknown. An appraiser must be completely impartial and provide objective valuations, which is only possible with adequate training and a deep knowledge of the sector.”
A Day in the Life: Appraisals, Design, and Social Media

Every day is different. Some days I dedicate to performing appraisals, which is an important part of my activity. Other days I accompany a client to choose a piece of jewelry for a special occasion or meet to design the restyling of an old piece. I also spend time in my workshop, working at the jewelry bench, something I deeply enjoy.

Regarding social media, they form an essential part of my work, and I am fortunate to collaborate with Monika Sed in content creation. We share our own projects and also give visibility to other professionals in the sector, such as artisan jewelers, lapidary workshops, diamond wholesalers, and vintage jewelry stores. Our goal is to generate synergies and promote the consumption of high-quality, locally manufactured products.

Gem Soirée: Fusing Gastronomy and Jewelry

The idea arose from social gatherings I organized with women interested in jewelry and art. I brought together a group of friends, all outstanding professionals in their respective fields, and proposed creating events that combined gastronomy, jewelry, and networking. Thus, Gem Soirée was born.

In collaboration with Mónica Rodríguez (chef), Montse Roca (sommelier), Monika Sed (photographer), and Ingrid Durán (event planner), we designed a seasonal menu to welcome autumn, accompanied by a wine pairing and a storytelling that connected each dish and wine with the presentation of a piece of jewelry. Our goal was to offer a unique experience that fused gastronomy with the universe of jewelry.

The Sector in a Moment of Change
“The sector is going through a moment of change, especially with the current situation of diamonds and the price of gold. Although the fluctuation in raw material prices is cyclical, the recent drop in the price of natural diamonds has been unexpected. The introduction of synthetic diamonds has played a role in this transformation.”
“While I consider lab-created diamonds to be a positive innovation, it is essential that customers are well-informed. There is room for both types of products, as long as transparency is the norm. As for natural diamonds, I am convinced that their situation is transitory. The industry must find a balance that allows both markets to coexist.”
