Editor’s Note
This article previews Phillips’ Tokyo exhibition, featuring works destined for a London auction and select Japanese-themed watches from an upcoming Hong Kong sale. It highlights the intersection of pop culture and horology.

Auction house Phillips is currently holding an exhibition at its Tokyo office in Roppongi. Coinciding with the second Tokyo Gendai art fair, these works are scheduled to be offered at an auction to be held in London in November.
Additionally, a select few pieces from the Japan-themed watch auction scheduled to be held in Hong Kong in the same month will be unveiled ahead of time. Highlights from the photography collection will be on display until July 16, while the watches, which were on display until July 5, will subsequently tour various locations across Japan.
The photography collection includes works created by artists who defined the 20th century, such as Richard Avedon, Robert Mapplethorpe, Helmut Newton, Irving Penn, and Andy Warhol.
Collected alongside a brilliant career in the fashion industry, these works represent an iconic collection that heralds a new era of fashion and pop culture. The pieces that became the source of the culture that continues to this day will offer new surprises and discoveries.
Watches to be offered in the Japan-themed watch auction “TOKI (刻)” are also on display. The exhibition features rare watches from global luxury brands manufactured exclusively for the Japanese market, timepieces previously owned by discerning Japanese collectors, and unique works created by independent Japanese watchmakers such as Naoya Hida and Hajime Asaoka.
