Housing: A Guide to the Basics

Editor’s Note

This guide outlines the primary methods for obtaining your first home in *The Elder Scrolls Online*, highlighting the free inn room available through the “A Room to Spare” quest.

ACQUIRING YOUR FIRST HOUSE

There are several ways to acquire your first house in The Elder Scrolls Online. The two most common are to buy a furnished or unfurnished house from the Crown Store, or to complete the housing tutorial quest, “A Room to Spare,” to obtain a free inn room.

This tutorial quest can be accessed in several ways: the simplest is to claim it for free from the “Quest Starters” tab in the Crown Store. You can also try to find the housing pamphlet that grants access to the quest in the bank of every major city outside of game packs. You will obtain the “A Room to Spare” housing pamphlet upon reaching level 18. You also have the option to visit Felande Demarie to receive the quest in each alliance’s starter city and in the major cities of chapter regions. Note: in alliance zones, you can only obtain a room if your character’s alliance matches that of the zone.

“Once you have started ‘A Room to Spare,’ speak to Felande Demarie to complete the quest and obtain the deed to your first home: an inn room.”

Once the room belongs to you, it is available across your entire account and can be found in the “Housing” category of the Collections menu. The houses you acquire in ESO are yours forever, with no maintenance fees or credit to pay. They are accessible to all characters on your account. Placed furniture and other modifications persist when you switch characters.

ACQUIRING NEW HOUSES

Would you like to have several houses? It’s possible! In fact, you can even own every house that exists in the game. The simplest way to acquire them is to spend Crowns in the Crown Store or in-game gold. Additionally, houses are sometimes available as part of promotions or as rewards. Visit the one you’d like to have or go to the ESO website for all the details!

Buying Houses in the Crown Store

You can buy furnished and unfurnished houses in the Crown Store. Furnished houses come with preselected furniture that can be moved or replaced, but not traded or sold to other players. Unfurnished houses come with a small number of furnishings, including lighting and natural elements, but will require more work to make them as beautiful as possible.

Most houses are available in the Crown Store, with a few exceptions, including the inn rooms from “A Room to Spare.” Some are not permanently available, such as those tied to holidays or exclusive offers. There are no special conditions for buying a house from the Crown Store.

Go to the Crown Store and access the “Housing” section. You can then browse the categories “Basic Homes” (inn rooms, apartments, and small houses), “Classic Homes” (medium and large houses), and “Notable Homes” (mansions). You can preview and visit the furnished and unfurnished versions of each house before deciding whether to purchase it.

Buying Houses with Gold

If you prefer to buy your houses in ESO with in-game gold, it’s possible. Many unfurnished houses can be purchased with gold, although there are also some exclusive to the Crown Store. Your character’s first inn room is free. You can then buy others, or redo the quest with different characters.

There may be criteria to meet to be able to buy a house with gold in ESO. For example, if you want to acquire additional inn rooms, you must have completed the quest “A Room to Spare.” For other houses, it may be necessary to have earned an achievement. Go to the “Housing” section of the Collections menu to know the exact conditions. You can also go to the entrance of a house available in the game world (indicated by a house icon on the map) to view it and potentially purchase it.

TYPES OF HOUSES AND PURCHASE CONDITIONS

Here are the different types of houses available and the conditions required to obtain them.

Inn Rooms

Your first home in Tamriel will likely be a modest inn room. They belong to the basic homes category, and one can be found in each alliance zone as well as in major cities like Vivec, Alinor, Rimmen, Solitude, Leyawiin, Gonfalon, and Necrom. You can acquire one for free by completing the quest “A Room to Spare,” then buy others for 3,000 gold each. It is not possible to buy inn rooms with Crowns.
