This article examines the critical role of legendary gems in Diablo Immortal, highlighting their power to define character strength and the significant investment—both in-game and financial—required to obtain the highest-tier versions.
Legendary gems hold significant importance in Diablo Immortal. They greatly enhance equipment stats and combat rating, making them a key measure of character progression. However, high-tier legendary gems are tied to premium currency, and obtaining a perfect 5/5 star gem is difficult even with substantial investment.
Even if you’re lucky enough to acquire a high-tier legendary gem, there’s another problem. No matter how high the tier, a gem cannot perform to its full potential without being upgraded. For high-tier gems, upgrading just one rank requires 50 Gem Power. This requirement increases with each upgrade, and from certain ranks, it even demands duplicate gems as upgrade materials, making enhancement progressively more difficult.
Of course, if you have the capital to invest heavily, using these high-tier gems is ideal. But as the tier increases, they become harder to obtain and even harder to upgrade, making them difficult to manage with moderate investment. In reality, many players hit a wall here.
Therefore, free-to-play and low-spend users need a different strategy: using 1-2 star, low-tier legendary gems. 1-2 star gems are much easier to acquire compared to ?/5 star gems. They can be reliably obtained from Legendary Crests and can also be crafted. Crafting is done with Runes, and missing Runes can be purchased or exchanged at the Smoldering Embers vendor. Obtaining multiple copies of the same gem is also not overly difficult, allowing you to aim for higher ranks.
Since Resonance and Combat Rating increase with rank, proper enhancement can greatly help in meeting the minimum stat requirements for entering higher difficulties.
The performance of the magical affixes on 1-2 star gems is not significantly inferior. While high-tier gems mostly grant special abilities to the character, the affixes on low-tier gems focus on direct stat improvements. Some of them possess quite good affixes, making them sufficiently viable for practical use.
However, low-tier gems do have a clear ceiling. As difficulty increases, more Resonance and Combat Rating are required, and low-tier gems inherently have their limits.
But this isn’t a major issue because when you convert an enhanced gem into Gem Fragments, you recover the resources invested in its enhancement. Therefore, if you acquire a better gem, you can convert your previously enhanced gem into fragments and use those.

Even upgrading them to high ranks is worthwhile! Recommended high-performance 1-2 star gems:
- Battleguard: Reduces damage taken from melee attacks, helping improve the survivability of melee damage dealers.
- Bloody Reach: Damage increases proportionally to distance from the target. Ranged damage dealers like Demon Hunters should consider using it.
- Power & Command: While it’s not easy to precisely time primary attacks and skills with its activation cycle, it boosts the character’s overall firepower.
- Berserker’s Eye: It has a penalty but directly and significantly increases DPS. It suits ranged damage dealers who are less likely to get hit.
- Carsen’s Encouragement: Increases primary attack speed and damage, making it useful for almost all classes.
- Everlasting Torment: Applies a damage-over-time effect on critical hits and increases attack power.
- Freedom & Devotion: Increases minion duration, reducing downtime, and also boosts minion damage.
- Chained Death: Useful for area-of-effect damage dealers like Wizards.
