As the summer travel season approaches, the Algerian Directorate General of Customs has intensified its information campaign to clarify procedures for declaring currency and valuables. This article outlines the latest guidance for travelers.

In anticipation of the summer season, marked by a high influx of travelers at the country’s ports and airports, the Algerian Directorate General of Customs (DGD) is intensifying information campaigns regarding customs procedures, particularly concerning currencies.
After explaining the procedure for subscribing to the Customs Passage Title (TPD), Algerian Customs has released a new brochure to remind travelers of the procedure for declaring currencies and valuables.
The document immediately reminds that the import and export of currencies, Algerian dinars and foreign currencies, are mandatory subject to a written declaration to the customs services beyond certain thresholds.
Regarding the thresholds allowed without declaration, the DGD indicates that any Algerian traveler (resident and non-resident) is required to declare in writing, at the entry or exit customs office, amounts denominated in imported or exported foreign currency exceeding 1,000 euros or their equivalent in other currencies.
For foreign travelers, they are required to declare in writing, at the entry or exit customs office, amounts denominated in foreign currency exceeding 5,000 euros or their equivalent in other currencies.
When exiting the national territory, resident and non-resident travelers are authorized to export a maximum cash amount equal to 7,500 euros or its equivalent in another foreign currency per calendar year.
Customs declaration is also mandatory for the transport of valuables, namely personal jewelry made of gold, platinum, silver, or palladium. Declaration is mandatory for any weight exceeding 100 grams upon import and 150 grams upon export.
To facilitate the declaration procedure for currencies and valuables, the customs services have set up an electronic platform called Alces, allowing for these declarations to be made electronically before arrival at the customs office.
