Raid Reveals Crores in Assets

On Thursday, a team from the Lokayukta (anti-corruption ombudsman) conducted raids at the premises of retired PWD engineer GP Mehtra. Mehtra, who is currently posted as Chief Engineer at the Madhya Pradesh Warehousing and Logistics Corporation after his retirement, amassed immense wealth during his tenure in the PWD. The raids uncovered assets worth crores of rupees, far exceeding his known income. GP Mehtra has developed a private island in an area adjoining Bhopal, where he engages in fish farming and has also constructed VIP cottages.

Earning Money from Honey

The Lokayukta raids revealed that retired engineer GP Mehtra was also earning money from honey. He developed a private island-like property in village Saini, Sohagpur tehsil, Narmadapuram, where he was engaged in beekeeping. Construction of cottages is also underway at this site. He used to earn income from honey. The Lokayukta team seized 17 tonnes of honey from there. It is reported that GP Mehtra was preparing to build a luxury resort at this location.

Retired in 2024

GP Mehtra retired from the Public Works Department in February 2024, at which time he was a Chief Engineer. According to the Lokayukta, GP Mehtra was posted at various locations during his government service and amassed illegal wealth during this period. Mehtra also owns a PVC factory in Govindpura Industrial Area, Bhopal.

Treasure Found in One Flat

Mehtra’s assets are spread across multiple locations. The largest cache of cash and gold was found in a flat located in Bhopal. This flat is in Opal Regency, Daan Paani area. From here, Rs 26 lakh in cash, over 2.5 kg of gold, and over half a kilogram of silver were recovered, with an estimated value running into crores. Information about other properties has also been obtained.

A Fleet of Luxury Cars

Additionally, GP Mehtra was found to possess a fleet of luxury cars. Some of these vehicles are registered in his name, while others are in the names of relatives. He has also made investments in the names of relatives and family members. The Lokayukta’s investigation is ongoing.

Allegations at Current Posting

After retirement, GP Mehtra is posted at the Madhya Pradesh Warehousing and Logistics Corporation. Allegations have also surfaced here regarding tenders. There are allegations of irregularities in a tender for warehouse maintenance. This tender was cancelled following controversies.
