This article highlights a key initiative in Guangdong’s jewelry sector, focusing on a pilot project that merges digitalization with green transformation. By fostering collaboration between academia and industry, the project aims to set new standards and cultivate talent to support the sustainable growth of the Greater Bay Area’s jewelry industry.

On January 9th, the launch ceremony for the Guangdong Province Jewelry Industry Digitalization and Green Transformation Standardization Pilot Project’s industry co-construction initiative was held at Guangzhou Vocational and Technical University. This project aims to establish standards through a school-enterprise collaborative talent cultivation platform, providing talent support for the upgrade of the jewelry industry in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, thereby promoting the digitalization and green development of this traditional industry.
Li Jian, Dean of the Jewelry College at Guangzhou Vocational and Technical University, stated that the jewelry industry is currently facing dual pressures of digitalization and green transformation. In terms of digitalization, traditional handcrafting shows certain limitations in scaling up and achieving refined production, while digital production methods like 3D printing can enhance the production efficiency and precision of jewelry. Regarding green transformation, the industry needs to focus on improving traditional processes like electroplating, adopting more environmentally friendly materials and techniques to reduce environmental pollution during production.
As a crucial cluster for the national jewelry industry, the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area accounts for over 70% of the country’s output. However, barriers still exist among the three regions in areas like production and talent mobility. This project will prioritize the development of interoperable standards for the technical skill talent certification system within the Greater Bay Area’s jewelry industry. It aims to promote mutual recognition of qualifications in talent cultivation, evaluation, and practice among the regions, providing strong talent support for the digital and green transformation of the local jewelry industry.
Furthermore, the project has collaborated with multiple industrial parks, leading enterprises, and universities in the Greater Bay Area to jointly formulate the group standard “Guidelines for the Construction of School-Enterprise Collaborative Talent Cultivation Platforms in Industrial Parks.” This standard systematically regulates the construction principles, organizational framework, operational mechanisms, and evaluation systems for school-enterprise co-construction and collaborative talent cultivation platforms. Through this platform, enterprises can deeply participate in talent cultivation and connect with R&D resources; universities can dynamically respond to industry demands and co-build teaching and practical training systems; and the industry can integrate regional resources to construct a sustainable talent supply ecosystem.
