According to exclusive information received by CNBC-Awaaz from sources, a high-level meeting may soon be convened to review the performance of public sector general insurance companies. This review will include National Insurance, Oriental Insurance, and United India Insurance. Following the review, a decision will be made on capital infusion with the objective of strengthening the companies and determining their future strategy. It has been reported that provisions for this capital infusion can be included in the budget if needed.
Sources have indicated that if the financial health of the companies improves, the government may also decide to list one or two companies. Additionally, the government may move forward with a proposal for the privatization of one general insurance company. This is linked to the announcement made in the budget regarding the privatization of a general insurance company.
Sources also revealed that avenues will be explored to channel the benefits of the increased Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) limit in the insurance sector. This step is considered one of the options for reforming the sector and attracting investment. Overall, at the government level, there will be discussions on the review of these general insurance companies, potential capital infusion, listing, and privatization-related proposals.
