“The initiatives from Sheinbaum aim to strengthen customs controls to improve competitiveness and establish tariffs to incentivize national production.”

According to Senate Coordinator Ricardo Monreal, these laws are intended to address irregularities in customs operations and are not a prelude to a trade war. Monreal has also ruled out the creation of new taxes but has not dismissed increases to existing ones.
