A Rare Cut That Shines with Classic Craftsmanship

Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce announced their engagement not long ago, but the “Old Mine Cut Diamond” has already become a major topic of conversation. The proposal photo the couple posted on Instagram clearly shows the engagement ring on Swift’s left ring finger, drawing the attention of millions to its design.
The ring was created by Kindred Ruebeck, a jewelry designer at New York-based Artifex Fine Jewelry. It features a large, brilliantly shining diamond set in a bezel on a slender gold band with delicate details that catch the eye. Everyone was captivated by its splendor.

“Taylor’s ring (diamond) appears to be around 8 to 10 carats,” estimates Stephanie Gottlieb, a jeweler Swift is close with. “Depending on the specific specs, a natural diamond of this size could be valued between $400,000 and $800,000.”

Needless to say, the posted photo of the ring has sparked much debate over its price and the exact size of the diamond. Daniela Tarantino, who heads merchandising at major US online jewelry retailers James Allen and Blue Nile, says, “With a yellow gold band and a diamond likely set between 10 and 15 total carats, I imagine it could be worth $750,000 to $1 million.” While Kelce’s engagement ring budget may be considerably higher than the average person’s, the popularity of the Old Mine Cut diamond he chose for Swift has been rising over the past year.

“With the rise in popularity of engagement rings using lab-grown diamonds, we’ve seen a significant increase in clients interested in more unique antique stones,” says Gottlieb. “Antique diamonds have a character that cannot be replicated in man-made ones.”

Among these, Old Mine Cut diamonds are particularly hard to come by due to their long history and distinctive structure.

“What’s captivating about Taylor’s ring is its heritage and rarity,” says jeweler Suzy Saltsman. “Natural Old Mine diamonds are rare, each hand-cut centuries ago. Many feature a small facet at the bottom called an ‘open culet,’ which to the untrained eye can look like a hole. This facet, symbolic of old-world craftsmanship, combined with the diamond’s unique proportions, makes Swift’s ring exceptionally special.”

An engagement ring using an Old Mine Cut diamond can make the center stone look sufficiently glamorous without incorporating too many decorative elements into the design. Swift’s ring also features a design that highlights the center stone, with the large diamond bezel-set on a split-shank gold band.

“This type of cut is well-suited for solitaire rings where the diamond is the star. Alternatively, accenting it with other stones on the sides can create a more cohesive overall impression,” says Gottlieb.

And due to their rarity, if you want one for an engagement ring, it’s best to entrust a reliable jeweler with sourcing the diamond and crafting the ring. However, they are occasionally available at antique shops.

Always Trend-Sensitive

Considering Swift, who is always trend-sensitive and loves vintage, an Old Mine Cut diamond engagement ring is very much her style. Furthermore, according to Pinterest’s 2025 Wedding Trend Report, searches for 1920s vintage marriage rings increased by 1,458% and searches for vintage cushion cut engagement rings increased by 175% over the past year.

“Swift’s engagement will undoubtedly further accelerate this trend,” says Saltsman. “Both collectors and brides are seeking diamonds with the history, charm, and character that Swift’s possesses. Due to tariff impacts and decreasing supply, diamonds with this special cut and proportion will become even harder to obtain and more expensive.”
