Exhibition Overview

The exhibition “Venus of the New Era! 100 Years of Art Deco” has commenced at the Nakanoshima Museum of Art in Osaka. The exhibition, themed “Art Deco and Women,” will run until January 4, 2026.

What is Art Deco?

“Art Deco” originates from the “Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes” held in Paris, France, in 1925 (commonly known as the Art Deco Exposition) and is now also known as the name of a decorative style. This exhibition focuses on this pivotal moment in art history that occurred exactly 100 years ago. The curator is Naoko Hirai (Chief Curator, Nakanoshima Museum of Art).

Curator’s Insight

Ahead of the opening, Hirai commented on the exhibition:

“This special exhibition has been in the works since before the museum opened. What is unique about Art Deco is that ‘there is no one who advocated for the style.’ In other words, it is a rare case where it spread internationally before anyone realized. This has similarities with how information spreads today and could be considered a precursor.”

This points to the fact that Art Deco has no fixed form, leading to the birth of designs utilizing this style worldwide, primarily in Europe. This exhibition examines this somewhat elusive style through the theme of “women,” exploring its representations and various design aspects from six perspectives: “The Art Deco Expo and Deco Style,” “The Age of Speed and Women,” “The Fashion of the Venuses,” “The Work and Leisure of the Venuses,” “The Ultimate Venus is Me!,” and “The Aspirations of the Venuses! Jewelry and Skyscrapers.”
