This article highlights Tanzania’s launch of a new online auction system for gemstones, overseen by the Mining Commission. The initiative seeks to modernize the sector by enhancing transparency and efficiency for both domestic and international buyers.

Buyers of gemstones from across Tanzania and abroad have turned out in large numbers to participate in a new online auction system established by the Ministry of Minerals under the supervision of the Mining Commission. The initiative aims to improve efficiency and transparency in the country’s gemstone trade.
The surge in buyers followed a day of inspections at the Tanzania Gemmological Centre (TGC) in Arusha, where consignments for the Third Gemstone Auction, held on November 27, 2025, were verified and assessed for quality. Officials say the event highlights the growing contribution of the sector to the national economy.

Director of Mineral Inspections and Trade at the Mining Commission, Venance Kasiki, said the new system has been designed with transparency in mind, enabling traders to purchase gemstones from anywhere, unlike the previous framework which lacked openness.
He added that inspections are crucial to ensuring transparency, competitiveness, and market value, as all gemstones listed in the digital auction must meet recognised standards. This helps build confidence in Tanzania’s gemstone sector among both domestic and international buyers.
Mr Kasiki said the online auction has attracted many traders because of its transparency, reducing the risk of purchasing substandard gemstones.

He also warned that attempts to smuggle gemstones abroad carry severe penalties, as the government is entitled to its rightful revenue.
Senior Trade Officer at the Tanzania Mercantile Exchange (TMX), Nicholaus Kaserwa, noted that their key role in the gemstone sector is to oversee auctions and enhance transparency, which participants have observed in today’s competitive bidding process.
Traders welcomed the new system. They said the auction provided a secure environment, allowing buyers to pay for gemstones using a dedicated payment number, eliminating the risks associated with handling cash.

The digital platform, officials said, is expected to strengthen confidence in Tanzania’s gemstone trade, expand market access for miners and traders, and ensure that the sector continues contributing significantly to the country’s economy.
