This report details a successful operation by Dubai Police, who used advanced technology to intercept a smuggling attempt and recover a valuable pink diamond.
Dubai Police have recovered a rare pink diamond valued at $25 million after thwarting a criminal gang’s attempt to smuggle it out of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), official sources reported on Monday.
stated the police, who have named this operation ‘Pink Diamond’.
The criminals’ plan was to identify the diamond’s owner, a jeweler, and make him believe a wealthy buyer was interested in acquiring it. To do this, the suspects posed as wealthy individuals, renting luxury cars and organizing meetings in luxury hotels, until they finally convinced the merchant to take the diamond out of his secure store, which allowed them to steal it, according to the police force.
As soon as the merchant reported the crime, a specialized task force was formed to identify and locate the three suspects, who initially lived together but separated after the robbery and moved to different locations, the report notes.
The pink diamond is classified as ‘Fancy Intense’ and weighs 21.25 carats. It is certified by a prestigious gemological institute and possesses unique purity, with only a 0.01% chance of finding another like it. Dubai, the financial capital of the UAE, is a major hub for the trade of diamonds and other precious metals.
