Editor’s Note

The Dutch outdoor brand Gaastra is set for a new chapter. As reported, German apparel group Clinton has secured long-term licensing rights for the brand in key European markets, signaling a strategic revival for the heritage label.

Clinton Acquires Long-Term License Rights for Gaastra

The Dutch outdoor brand Gaastra is poised for another restart. On Wednesday, the clothing conglomerate Clinton Großhandels-GmbH, based in Hoppegarten near Berlin, announced that it has acquired the “long-term license rights” for Gaastra.
A company spokesperson explained to FashionUnited that the license agreement covers “a long-term, comprehensive right of use for the brand in relevant core European markets” and includes “the central product categories in the areas of sportswear, casualwear, and accessories that reflect the character and positioning of the brand.” The goal now is to “strategically and sustainably develop the Gaastra brand in existing as well as selected new markets.” The product design will be handled by an “own, experienced in-house team.”

Strengthening the Multi-Brand Strategy

“With this strategic decision, the company is strengthening its multi-brand strategy and expanding its portfolio with one of the most renowned heritage brands in the premium sportswear segment,” Clinton stated. The corporate group also includes the brands Camp David, Soccx, Harlem Soul, and Senses. The Label.
The Gaastra brand, primarily known for maritime sailing apparel, was reportedly discontinued in spring 2024 following the insolvency of its then-parent company, Unlimited Footwear Group (UFG). Just two years prior, UFG had initiated the relaunch of Gaastra, after the brand founded in 1897 had previously disappeared from the market.

Relaunch Scheduled for Spring 2026

Clinton has now announced another “official relaunch” of the label for spring 2026. At that time, the company also plans to announce further details regarding the collection and market strategy.
Dima Shlyakhta, Head of Wholesale at Clinton, explained the move.

“With Gaastra, we are not only gaining a traditional sportswear brand but also strong emotional capital that resonates greatly in retail and with consumers,” he stated. “We are convinced that Gaastra optimally complements our brand portfolio and opens up new opportunities for us in national and international markets.”
