New Delhi: The International Gemological Institute (IGI) has reaffirmed its commitment to applying the universal 4Cs grading system – cut, color, clarity, and carat – to all diamonds, including lab-grown ones, amid a shift by some industry players to alternate grading methods, according to a media release on Thursday.
IGI, which began grading lab-grown diamonds in 2005, said it chose to apply the 4Cs to both natural and lab-grown diamonds to maintain consistency and prevent confusion.
The institute added, “At IGI, we are not just grading diamonds – we are safeguarding the trust that consumers place in us.”
IGI operates 31 laboratories across 10 countries and holds ISO 17025 accreditation. It is audited by the Big Four and is a member of the Responsible Jewellery Council. IGI is also the only gemological laboratory listed on a stock exchange.
The Blackstone-backed institute holds a 50% market share in India’s diamond certification space.
