【New Zealand】Loro Piana Focuses on Traceability: Precious Black Sheep Wool Now Certified

Editor’s Note

This article explores how luxury fashion is leveraging blockchain technology to enhance transparency. By digitally certifying rare black sheep wool, brands aim to provide consumers with verifiable traceability from farm to final garment, marrying traditional craftsmanship with modern assurance.

Blockchain Certification for Traceability

Clothing made from precious black sheep wool will be registered on a blockchain platform to guarantee its traceability. This fiber is renowned for its natural, undyed color, allowing for the creation of fabrics with unique shades ranging from black to brown to grey. Starting from the 2025 Spring/Summer collection, the renowned LVMH group brand will introduce a dedicated digital certification system for this black sheep wool. Customers will be able to track the entire product lifecycle via a QR code on the product: from breeding and fiber processing to the finished garment.

Valued for Natural Tones and Exclusive Sourcing

This wool is valued for its natural and inclusive tones and is used to create fabrics with distinctive characteristics. Since 2003, the brand has sourced the raw material exclusively from a single farm in New Zealand, where the Gardner family acts as custodians of this precious resource. For the 2024/2025 Autumn/Winter season, the traditional three-thread weave fabric was reinterpreted, with each thread featuring a different dark shade, creating a unique three-dimensional visual effect.

A Unique Herd with a Rich History

The history of this special wool has deep origins. New Zealand breeder Fiona Gardner cultivated a flock of black-wooled sheep, going against the tradition that favored white sheep, which are easier to dye. In the 1980s, Fiona inherited a small group of black sheep and, with her family’s support, nurtured a flock unique in the world, with natural fleece colors ranging from deep black to grey and brown.

“Her dedication allowed her to hone exceptional expertise in wool selection and sorting, creating a valuable resource for those seeking the quality and authenticity of natural materials.”

This journey has given rise to garments made from black sheep wool, which stand out for their refinement and respect for the brand’s artisanal roots.
