Overview of Retail Companies

Retailers resell goods to the public that they’ve purchased from wholesalers and manufacturers. These goods can include apparel, jewelry, housewares, small appliances, electronics, groceries, and pharmaceutical products.
Some retailers sell services as well, and these can cover a broad range from tool and equipment rentals, auto care, and cloud computing. Retail sales are reported monthly and represent consumer spending, which accounts for about two-thirds of U.S. economic activity.
Retail companies have traditionally sold their products and services through brick-and-mortar department stores, warehouses, convenience stores, supermarkets, and other kinds of outlets. But many retailers are increasingly selling their goods online through websites, Internet marketplaces, and mobile applications.
These are the 10 biggest retail companies by 12-month trailing (TTM) revenue. This list is usually limited to companies that are publicly traded in the U.S. or Canada, either directly or through ADRs, but international companies are included to better represent the sector.
Some companies outside the U.S. report profits semi-annually instead of quarterly, so the 12-month trailing data may be older than it is for companies that report quarterly.
