The resale market is larger than ever, and some buyers make their purchases with this exact thought in mind. Certain classic pieces, like a Hermès Birkin or a Rolex Datejust, retain their value. According to the luxury resale platform The RealReal, these five items are particularly smart investments.
What’s old becomes new again – and sometimes even more expensive. The resale market has reached new heights this year: According to McKinsey’s State of Luxury 2025 report, one in three American luxury consumers has already bought or sold on a resale platform.
And some buyers are looking for investments. The online secondhand shop ThredUp found in a survey on the secondhand market that 47 percent of buyers consider the resale value of clothing before purchasing.
A new report from luxury shop The RealReal examines which items have held their price over time. While some trendy pieces – like the Tiffany & Co. Bone Cuff or the Row Margaux bag – have seen their resale value surge in recent years, there are certain products that are “classics” and whose value “remains strong,” the report states.
As tariffs lead to price increases in the luxury segment, there is reason to believe their value on the secondhand market will continue to rise.
Although even the CEO of Rolex advises against buying luxury goods solely as an investment, these five items have shown “consistent growth in resale value” based on sales data since 2021, according to The RealReal.
