GJEPC Welcomes India’s Election as KP Chair

The Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC), India’s nodal agency for the Kimberley Process (KP), has welcomed India’s election as Chair of the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme (KPCS) for 2026.

About the Kimberley Process

The Kimberley Process Certification Scheme is a UN-mandated initiative governing international trade in rough diamonds, aimed at preventing conflict diamonds from entering legitimate supply chains. It remains the only global mechanism regulating this segment of the diamond industry.

India’s Role and Appointment

India, a founding participant of the Kimberley Process, will assume the Chair from January 1, 2026. The decision was approved by consensus through a written procedure initiated on December 5, 2025. India will also serve as Vice Chair for 2025, effective December 25, 2025.
The Kimberley Process comprises 60 participants representing 80 countries, with the European Union considered as one participant. India’s appointment as Vice Chair and Chair reflects international confidence in its leadership within the KP framework.

Commenting on the development, Kirit Bhansali of GJEPC said,

“GJEPC welcomes India’s selection of the Kimberley Process Chair role for the year 2026. India’s selection reflects the international community’s trust in the Indian Government’s principled and inclusive approach of strengthening global diamond trade through efficient governance of the Kimberley Process.”

Reaffirming industry support, Bhansali added,

“As the nodal agency, GJEPC will work closely with the Government of India and all stakeholders to support India’s Vice Chairpersonship and subsequent Chairpersonship. We remain committed to advancing best practices, strengthening compliance, and reinforcing confidence in conflict-free diamonds across global markets.”
