GEM Hospital in Coimbatore launched Dr. GEM, an advanced AI-powered cancer chatbot, on February 3, 2026 (Tuesday), marking a milestone in digital oncology on the occasion of World Cancer Day.
Eminent scientist A. Sivathanu Pillai, former Chief Controller (R&D) of the Defence Research and Development Organisation, and A. Saravana Sundar, Inspector General of Police, West Zone, Coimbatore, were the guests at the launch.
The highlight of the event was the launch of Dr. GEM, a 24/7 AI cancer care assistant designed to provide accurate information, symptom guidance, screening awareness, and post-treatment support in a non-intimidating, conversational format. A demonstration video illustrated how users can interact effortlessly with the chatbot via WhatsApp by scanning a QR code, encouraging open dialogue without fear or embarrassment.
C. Palani Velu, chairman of the GEM Hospital Group, underscored the hospital’s commitment to integrating technology with compassionate cancer care.
A women’s marathon anthem was also released during the event, resonating with themes of courage, endurance, and collective strength, and reinforcing the message of awareness and hope in cancer care. The dignitaries also honoured cancer survivors who have successfully recovered.
