Sri Lanka has unveiled a massive purple star sapphire, considered the largest of its kind in the world, with experts valuing it at a minimum of $300 million, making it one of the most expensive gemstones ever discovered.

The stone, named “Star of the Pure Earth,” weighs 3563 carats and is distinguished by a star-shaped pattern with six rays on its surface, making it exceptionally rare among sapphires. It was recently presented in the capital, Colombo, to a wide global audience.

“This jewel is the largest of its kind documented worldwide,”

Gem specialist Ashan Amarasinghe confirmed to the newspaper “Mirror,” highlighting its uniqueness and the star-shaped form that distinguishes it from other sapphires.

Discovery and Documentation of the Stone

The sapphire was discovered in 2023 near the city of Ratnapura, known as the “City of Gems,” before being purchased as part of a collection of other stones. The owners only realized its true value after two years, prompting them to officially document it and have it certified by specialized laboratories.

International Valuation

International valuation experts estimate the stone’s value to be between $300 and $400 million (£224 to £298 million), making it an extraordinary stone in terms of size, rarity, and quality.

Sri Lanka and the World of Sapphires

Sri Lanka is globally renowned for producing rare sapphires, known for their distinctive colors, purity, and natural brilliance. In recent years, several unique stones have been discovered, breaking records at international auctions, such as the blue “Regent Kashmir” sapphire, the “Black Star of Eva,” and the “Moment of Hope” green beryl.

The unveiling of the Star of the Pure Earth represents a stunning addition to Sri Lanka’s record in the world of rare gemstones and strengthens its position as one of the leading global sources for unique sapphires.
