【India】Vande Bharat Sleeper Train: Missed October Launch, When Will It Finally Hit the Tracks?

Editor’s Note

The introduction of Vande Bharat Sleeper trains, a highly anticipated upgrade for long-distance travel in India, has been delayed beyond the initial October 2025 target. While the government remains committed to the project, technical and design issues have postponed the launch. This article examines the reasons behind the setback and the future outlook for these next-generation trains.

Technical and Design Issues Cause Delay

Vande Bharat trains have redefined the travel experience in India. They are significantly faster than other trains and offer unmatched onboard amenities. The government is now set to introduce Vande Bharat Sleeper trains soon. While the announcement was made much earlier, and it was anticipated that the first Vande Bharat Sleeper train would start running in October 2025, this has not happened. The sleeper trains are intended for long-distance routes. However, due to some technical flaws and design-related issues, the train could not be launched in October. A final date for its launch has not been announced yet, but after addressing the noted deficiencies, the train is expected to be seen on the tracks soon. Recently, the Railway Board, in a letter, pointed out some deficiencies related to workmanship and interior finishing in the train. These include flaws in the design of window curtain handles, sharp corners near berths, and gaps between berth connectors where dust can accumulate. The Board directed that these issues in the existing train rake be rectified immediately and necessary improvements be incorporated into the design of future trains.

No Launch Without Safety

Indian Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw had said the Vande Bharat train would start in October, but the ministry has now clarified that the train will not be launched for passengers until all safety and comfort-related parameters are fully met. However, the ministry has granted operational permission for the 16-coach Vande Bharat Sleeper rake, provided all deficiencies are addressed. From a safety perspective, the ministry has issued directives to install the ‘Kavach 4.0’ system in the train, ensure fire safety compliance, conduct regular checks of the braking system, and ensure reliable communication between the driver, guard, and station master. Additionally, for passenger comfort, the train’s temperature will be controlled to maintain a comfortable environment even with frequent door openings and closings.

RDSO Submits Its Report

The railways stated that trained technical staff should be present on every route so that coaches can be detached within 15 minutes in an emergency. Before train operation, RDSO obtains final approval from the Chief Commissioner of Railway Safety (CCRS) after safety trials and sends a report to the ministry; only then is operational permission granted. In the case of the Vande Bharat Sleeper, RDSO submitted its report on September 1, 2025. The ministry has issued instructions for passenger safety, including repeated announcements via the PA system before departure urging non-passengers to disembark, and playing recorded messages in three languages (Hindi, English, and the local language) during the journey to keep passengers aware of safety rules.
