IGI Inaugurates Second State-of-the-Art Lab in Jaipur

JAIPUR. The International Gemological Institute (IGI), a global organization for the certification of diamonds, colored gemstones, and jewelry, inaugurated its second state-of-the-art laboratory in Jaipur on Thursday. This new lab, which commenced operations on January 29, 2026, has been established in Jaipur’s Sitapura Industrial Area, further strengthening IGI’s presence in North India. Jaipur is internationally recognized for its trade in colored gemstones, uncut polki, and traditional jewelry craftsmanship.

According to IGI, the establishment of the laboratory in Sitapura aims to provide fast, accurate, and reliable certification services to manufacturers, exporters, and traders by being in close proximity to the gem and jewelry industry. This will not only increase transparency and trust for consumers but also directly benefit the local industry.

Rapid Shift in Consumer Preferences
“There is a rapid shift in consumer preferences globally, and the demand for colored gemstones is continuously increasing,” said Tehmasp Printer, Managing Director and Global Chief Executive Officer of IGI, on this occasion.

He explained that fusion designs, personalized jewelry, and the rarity and beauty of colored gemstones have further accelerated this demand. In such a scenario, the accurate identification of a gemstone’s origin and any treatments it has undergone has become more important than ever before.

Use of Advanced Technology

The new laboratory in Jaipur will utilize advanced technologies such as Raman spectrometry, UV-Vis-NIR spectroscopy, and X-ray fluorescence. Through these instruments, the internal structure, composition, and inclusions of gemstones can be analyzed to determine their geological origin and history. This facility will provide the full spectrum of IGI’s certification services for diamonds, colored gemstones, and jewelry.

Promoting Regional Skills

Additionally, the IGI office in Sitapura will also operate globally recognized training programs through the IGI School of Gemology to promote regional skill development. These courses will provide the industry with trained and skilled human resources. Notably, with this expansion, IGI now operates 35 laboratories across 10 countries.
