This report details a recent meeting between Sri Lanka’s Minister of Industries and leaders of Thailand’s gem and jewelry trade association. The discussion centered on fostering international collaboration to strengthen Sri Lanka’s gem and jewelry sector.

Minister of Industries Sunil Hadunneththi met with representatives of the Thai Gem and Jewelry Traders Association (TGJTA) in Bangkok on 21 February to discuss strengthening Sri Lanka’s gem and jewellery sector.
The delegation included TGJTA chairman Chomphol Phornchindarak, and the meeting focused on enhancing industry capabilities and international trade.
Discussions covered technology exchange between Sri Lanka’s gem cutting expertise and Thailand’s advanced heat treatment methods, access to internationally recognised laboratory facilities in Thailand, and coordinated participation in global gem and jewellery exhibitions. NGJA chairman Dr. Chaminda Ekanayake also attended the meeting.
The initiative aims to attract major international buyers, increase the global value of Sri Lanka’s gem resources, and open new market opportunities while supporting the local economy.
