No Compromise on Interests of Farmers and Livestock Breeders: Government

US President Donald Trump called Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday night and announced the trade deal after the conversation. The opposition says that India’s interests have been ignored in the trade deal with the US, and it will prove particularly harmful for the country’s farmers and livestock breeders. However, the Commerce Minister said that ‘the country’s sensitive interests in sectors like agriculture and animal husbandry have been fully protected.’ He said that according to the reports he is receiving, there is jubilation in every sector regarding this agreement.

Trade Deal to Open Doors to Major Opportunities for India

He said that the trade deal with the US is going to open up major opportunities for India’s export sector. Describing India as the world’s fastest-growing economy, he said it will facilitate the supply of equipment for high-tech areas like data centers, semiconductors, and AI, as well as coking coal and other essential raw materials for its growing needs. He clarified that the $50 billion import figure from India mentioned by the US President is a five-year target.

Criticism of Opposition’s Uproar

Goyal criticized the opposition by referring to the uproar in Parliament. He said,

‘We wanted to give this statement about the agreement in Parliament, but the ugly scene created there today under the leadership of opposition leader Rahul Gandhi by Congress, DMK, Trinamool Congress, Samajwadi Party, and INDIA alliance parties is highly condemnable. That is why we have come here (before the media) for this statement.’
‘The US had imposed a 50% duty on India, the announcement to reduce it had to be made by them (Trump).’ – Piyush Goyal, Commerce Minister, Government of India
Rahul Gandhi Spreading Lies on Trade Deal: Goyal

The Commerce Minister accused the Congress of showing double character and said,

‘They were asking just a few days ago when the deal with the US would happen, now they are confusing the public by making baseless statements about this agreement.’

Goyal said,

‘Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has engaged in spreading complete lies about this agreement and is misleading the people of the country.’

Accusing Rahul Gandhi of having a negative mindset, he said,

‘(In the Lok Sabha) the opposition leader wants to confuse the country in the name of lies and deceit. He has no interest in the country’s development. During the UPA’s tenure, development had stalled, the country began to be counted among the five major fragile economies, inflation was at its peak. Does he want India to return to that era again?’
PM Modi Will Not Compromise on Sensitive Sectors: Goyal

Regarding the announcement being made first by Trump, he said,

‘The US had imposed a 50% duty on India, the announcement to reduce it had to be made by them.’

The Commerce Minister said that this agreement became possible under the leadership of PM Modi after months of negotiations to resolve various complex issues and problems. He said that due to the high 50% duty in the US market, our farmers, fishermen, textile, and apparel makers were facing difficulties. Goyal said that the Prime Minister will never compromise the interests of India’s farmers, livestock breeders, fishermen, and other sensitive sectors.

Congress Had Trapped Us, Modi Found the Solution: Goyal

Goyal explained that the Prime Minister said,

‘Congress had trapped India in 2011-12 in the free trade agreement with China. It was Modi who, due to his persistent concerns for his farmers and livestock breeders, to protect their interests, kept India out of the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) agreement.’

He reiterated that sensitive sectors have been protected in the agreement with the US. Commerce Minister of State Jitin Prasad and Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agrawal were also present with Goyal at the press conference. Goyal did not take any questions from the media on this statement.
