Historic India-EU Free Trade Agreement Signed

After a long wait, the free trade agreement between India and the European Union has finally been concluded. Both sides have called it the ‘Mother of All Deals’. The political announcement of the agreement was signed and exchanged in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, and European Council President António Luís Santos da Costa.

“Today, India and Europe are making history. This agreement creates a free trade area for two billion people, which will benefit both sides.”
“This is just the beginning, and the strategic partnership will be further strengthened,” said European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi described the occasion as decisive for India’s economic future, stating that India and the European Union together account for nearly twenty-five percent of global GDP and about one-third of the world’s total trade.

“This agreement will open new opportunities for 1.4 billion Indians and millions of European citizens,” said Prime Minister Modi.
Key Tariff Reductions and Benefits

Under this free trade agreement, the European Union will eliminate or reduce tariffs on nearly 97 percent of its goods exports to India, saving about four billion euros annually. For India, this means European cars, beer, olive oil, and processed food will become cheaper. India will gain duty-free or preferential access for textiles, leather, marine products, and many labor-intensive sectors.

Specifically, tariffs on premium cars imported from Europe will be reduced, making vehicles like BMW and Mercedes available at lower prices. Taxes on European spirits, beer, and wine will also decrease, making these products more accessible to general consumers. Additionally, chocolate and other food items may become cheaper. The removal of tariffs on medical devices, optical machines, and advanced technical goods will reduce costs for healthcare services and industries. Sectors like gems, jewelry, and plastics will benefit from zero-duty access, positively impacting product prices and increasing competition in the domestic market.

Broader Strategic and Climate Dimensions

High tariffs on machinery, chemicals, and pharmaceuticals will be largely eliminated. The path to removing tariffs on aircraft and space equipment has also been cleared. The EU estimates that its exports to India could double by 2032. Both sides also announced a security and defense partnership alongside trade. The EU has pledged to support India’s green energy and climate efforts with 500 million euros in assistance over the next two years. This agreement is not only economic but also carries climate and strategic dimensions. The agreement is expected to take effect in early 2027.

A Clear Message in Changing Global Politics

The free trade agreement between India and the EU is also a clear message in the changing global political landscape. This message is a strong blow specifically to the pressure and tariff-based policies of US President Donald Trump. In recent years, the US has used trade as a weapon. High tariffs, threats, and pressure on allies became Trump’s hallmark. Additional tariffs on India for buying Russian oil and continuous pressure on Europe are examples of this policy. In such an environment, India and the EU making such a comprehensive deal with each other shows that the world now desires partnership, not pressure.
This agreement is also significant because trade talks between the US and Europe have stalled. Europe has made it clear that it will not bow to politics of humiliation and threat. India has also clearly drawn its red lines in sensitive areas like agriculture and dairy in trade talks with the US.

Strategic Implications and a Multipolar World

Strategically, this agreement will help diversify global supply chains. Europe’s need to reduce dependence on China and build secure supply chains makes India a natural partner. This agreement also opens new avenues for technology, investment, and employment for India. Furthermore, defense and security cooperation will bolster stability in the Indo-Pacific region. This deal also shows that trade agreements are not only for economic benefit but also for political balance. Both India and Europe are signaling that they are prepared to make independent decisions in a multipolar world. In contrast to Trump’s tariff policy, this agreement is based on dialogue, trust, and respect.

In conclusion, the India-EU free trade agreement is a glimpse of a new global order where partnership replaces pressure and trust replaces threat. The Modi government’s foreign policy has brought India to a position where it not only protects its own interests but also plays a decisive role in global stability. This is the greatest achievement of this historic agreement.
