Symbiosis Initiative for Traditional Market Involving 400 Stores and 500 Small Business Owners in Jinju Central Market, Gyeongsangnam-do

[Discovery News = Reporter Jeong Ki-hwan] Coupang and Coupang Eats Service (CES) are supporting the Jinju Central Market in Gyeongsangnam-do with approximately 110,000 eco-friendly packaging containers to revitalize the traditional market.

This support is designed to enhance the online sales competitiveness of traditional market merchants and provide practical assistance in their digital transition by alleviating the cost burden of packaging containers. Jinju Central Market, originating from the Jinju Commercial Office in 1884, stands as a representative commercial hub in the Jinju region.

Coupang and CES have proactively provided the eco-friendly packaging containers needed in the initial preparation stage so that traditional market merchants can smoothly transition to online sales. This enables merchants to secure packaging containers that can be immediately used for delivery services and other purposes, equipping them with the necessary conditions to prepare for online sales. Furthermore, they plan to provide certification stickers to stores practicing eco-friendly packaging to help spread an eco-friendly culture within the market.

This support is a follow-up measure to the ‘Traditional Market Symbiosis Agreement’ signed with the National Federation of Merchants last year. The two companies have been preparing an online sales capacity enhancement program for Jinju Central Market merchants since January this year and plan to conduct training for merchants in stages. The program is expected to include online sales strategy consulting such as store entry preparation training and support for professional photography of menus/products.

Previously, the two companies attended a Gyeongsangnam-do Merchants Federation workshop in December last year, sharing the progress and future plans of the traditional market symbiosis project. They directly listened to various opinions from merchants regarding their online entry and digital transformation, continuously strengthening regional-level cooperation.

“The eco-friendly packaging containers received through this support can be used immediately in our actual store, which has been a great help,” said ‘Daeho Kimbap,’ a store selling Korean meals and snack foods at Jinju Central Market in Gyeongsangnam-do. “Thanks to Coupang’s support, we have become interested in online sales and expect it to have a positive effect on future sales expansion.”
“Coupang Eats’ support of eco-friendly packaging containers is a great boost to the merchants of Jinju Central Market and is providing practical help in preparing for online sales,” said Kim Dong-guk, Chairman of the Jinju Central Market Merchants Association. “We expect traditional market stores to gain even more vitality through digital transformation as online sales strategy consulting and other support are added in the future.”
“For traditional markets to continue growing in the digital age, securing online competitiveness is essential,” said Kim Myeong-gyu, CEO of Coupang Eats Service. “We will continue to expand symbiotic programs that provide practical help to merchants and contribute to revitalizing the local economy.”
