Nanhu District Conducts Special Inspection on Precious Metal Jewelry Measurement

Against the backdrop of high gold prices, consumers are paying more attention to the accuracy of measurements when purchasing precious metal jewelry. To protect consumers’ legitimate rights and interests and avoid economic losses due to measurement deviations, the Nanhu District Market Supervision Bureau conducted a special measurement inspection on jewelry stores in the district yesterday afternoon.

On-site Inspection of Electronic Scales

At 2:30 PM, reporters followed law enforcement officers to the Zhou Dafu jewelry store on the first floor of the Nanhu Tiandi Shopping Center. The officers checked the verification certificates, validity periods, and conformity marks of the electronic scales one by one, and used standard weights for on-site testing to verify key indicators such as the display error of the electronic scales. At the same time, they randomly sampled jewelry from the store to verify whether the actual weight was consistent with the labeled weight, ensuring accurate transaction settlement.

Consumer Confidence and Store Practices

Subsequently, law enforcement officers inspected two brand jewelry stores, Chow Tai Fook and Chow Sang Sang. At Chow Tai Fook, citizen Mr. Li was shopping for jewelry with his loved one. He told the reporter that his baby was due in four months and he wanted to buy a meaningful gift.

“I’ve seen news reports about some stores tampering with scales, so I feel more at ease coming to a brand store.” Mr. Li said, “With gold prices high, as a consumer, I’m naturally concerned about weight. I always ask the store to weigh it before buying. It’s reassuring to encounter this market supervision inspection just now.”

At the Chow Sang Sang jewelry store, store manager Xu Lihuan introduced the store’s electronic scale verification process:

“According to regulations, electronic scales must be verified annually. We report online one month in advance, and the verification agency conducts the test. It takes about a week to get them back.”

She indicated that the store calibrates the electronic scales every morning before opening and proactively weighs items for customers after purchase, informing them of the precise weight to the decimal point, ensuring fair trade.

Law Enforcement and Future Supervision

During the inspection, law enforcement officers simultaneously conducted legal publicity, explaining laws and regulations such as the “Metrology Law of the People’s Republic of China,” reminding merchants to send measuring instruments for verification on time, improve measurement management systems, and fulfill their main responsibilities to operate with integrity.

Gu Chuntai, Section Chief of the Quality Standards and Metrology Supervision and Management Section of the Nanhu District Market Supervision Bureau, introduced that there are currently over 60 precious metal jewelry business units in Nanhu District. Since January this year, market supervision departments have carried out full-coverage special measurement inspections, focusing on the standardization, accuracy, and clear price labeling of measuring instruments. The overall inspection results are basically good, but some small stores have issues with non-standard measuring instruments and have been ordered to rectify immediately, requiring the use of electronic scales that meet precision standards. In the next step, the Nanhu District Market Supervision Bureau will continue to maintain high-pressure supervision over the jewelry industry, establish a long-term supervision mechanism, increase consumer publicity, and effectively maintain measurement order in the gold market.

The Nanhu District Market Supervision Bureau also reminds consumers to try to choose reputable brand jewelry stores when purchasing precious metal jewelry and keep relevant vouchers to better protect their own legitimate rights and interests.
