This article discusses the acquisition of American Gemological Laboratories (AGL) by the International Gemological Institute (IGI), a significant consolidation in the gem certification industry aimed at enhancing global standards for colored gemstones.

The International Gemological Institute (IGI) has acquired American Gemological Laboratories (AGL), marking the integration of two of the world’s leading gem testing and certification institutions. This move will strengthen the global certification capabilities for colored gemstones.
Through this acquisition, IGI’s global laboratory network and market reach have been combined with AGL’s expertise in colored gemstone science and origin determination. This combined platform from both entities will set new standards for reliability, transparency, and consistency.
Under the acquisition, AGL will operate independently under its own brand, maintain its headquarters in New York, and Chris Smith will remain in his position. No immediate operational changes are planned, and clients can expect continuity in technical standards and service.
This partnership will accelerate AGL’s international expansion, allowing its colored gemstone certification services to reach beyond the United States by leveraging IGI’s global infrastructure. Additionally, there will be a focus on education and training, with IGI incorporating AGL’s research and science-based teaching expertise into its global programs.
The acquisition is supported by Blackstone’s long-term investment strategy. This move will also strengthen strategic ties between the United States and India, which are key hubs in gem sourcing, manufacturing, and certification.
