Namdaemun Market is expanding its strategic collaborations to target global markets and accelerate digital transformation.
On February 6, the Namdaemun Merchants Association and its official agency Sogazem Co., Ltd. signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Japanese fashion jewelry company RoryXtyle (CEO Oh Jung-rok). This agreement aims to secure distribution channels for Namdaemun Market’s fashion jewelry products in Japan, and to pursue joint marketing and branding collaborations for online market entry.
Earlier, on January 17, the Namdaemun Merchants Association also signed MOUs with the World Korean Trade Association (OKTA) India Bangalore Chapter (Chairperson Jung Hyun-kyung) and Globalconnet Co., Ltd. (Chairman Hong Byung-chul) to strengthen cooperation in expanding global distribution networks through Korean diaspora economic networks. This is expected to facilitate more active entry of Namdaemun Market’s fashion jewelry and various consumer goods into the Indian and Southeast Asian markets.
On the same day, the association also signed an MOU with the Korea IT Business Promotion Association (ITA, Vice Chairman Choi Tae-rim) for the establishment of a digital hub. ITA is a leading organization in the development of Korea’s IT industry, supporting industrial innovation through cutting-edge technologies such as AI, big data, and digital twins. Through this agreement, Namdaemun Market will pursue digital transformation (DX) and AI transformation (AX) in earnest, and cooperate in building a digital hub that supports AI-based innovation in production, distribution, and marketing.
Namdaemun Market holds the potential to grow beyond a traditional wholesale market into a global consumer goods industry cluster. Currently, it hosts over 10,000 businesses and more than 20,000 workers, with the fashion jewelry sector alone generating an estimated 1 trillion won in unofficial exports annually. However, intensifying global competition has highlighted the limitations of relying solely on offline wholesale models for sustained growth. Consequently, Namdaemun Market is adopting AI Transformation (AX) as a core strategy, going beyond digital transformation.
Recognizing that simply building an online platform has limitations, the market sees AI-based innovation in production, distribution, and marketing as essential to respond nimbly to global market changes. AI can be applied in various ways within Namdaemun Market: it can analyze buyer preferences and trends in real-time to recommend optimal products; sellers can automatically generate high-quality product images and detailed pages for immediate online sales; and AI-based real-time inventory management systems and optimized smart logistics networks can enable overseas buyers to purchase products more quickly and efficiently.
These changes are expected to play a crucial role in positioning Namdaemun Market as an innovation hub for the global consumer goods industry, beyond being a mere production and distribution base. As competitors like China rapidly adopt AI-based digital trade systems to expand market share, there is growing demand for Namdaemun Market to differentiate itself through high-quality products and creative design.
To enhance the credibility of K-fashion and K-jewelry brands in the global market, it is necessary to move beyond simple OEM/ODM production models and expand OBM (own brand manufacturing) strategies that emphasize brand value and design competitiveness. This is not just about short-term sales growth but is a critical process for Namdaemun Market to become a leading global fashion and consumer goods hub representing Korea.
There are also increasing calls for systematic government support to ensure the success of these transformations. If practical support policies—such as building AI-based digital trade platforms, supporting global buyer-customized content creation, and establishing smart logistics networks—are implemented, Namdaemun Market is expected to further strengthen its global competitiveness. It is hoped that the agreements with Japan, India, and others will go beyond simply opening overseas markets, leading to AI-based trade innovation and the globalization of Korea’s consumer goods industry.
